Vacation Bible School
VBS is offered free to all children who wish to participate. Learn about our theme, "Knights of the North Castle"
No on-site VBS
DEADLINE HAS PASSED
For volunteers and children:
IF YOU REGISTERED, BUT DID NOT RECEIVE AN EMAIL ABOUT PICKING UP YOUR TAKE-HOME KIT, PLEASE CONTACT PASTOR MIKE. Kits can be picked up Monday Aug 10 from 4 to 6 pm in the Fellowship Center.
In response to the Governor’s order restricting group size in Hampton Roads to no more than 50, VBS 2020 is becoming a take-home virtual model, including pre-recorded videos.
HOWEVER, Pastor "Mike," Sparky the Dragon, and a few of their trusty assistants would be DELIGHTED to bring VBS to your backyard for a morning or afternoon! This is not required, of course, you can simply take home the kit and follow the caregiver-friendly instructions.
Each family will receive an email with the needed video inks and other goodies like a CD with all the music, and each child will receive a kit that contains all of the materials to make their own "suit of armor," and other crafts. Parents can choose when and how much of VBS to do. Do a session a day, like traditional VBS, or make it a big one-day event. Either way, we hope you will have fun. AND each child who completes their suit of armor and memorizes the Bible verse will receive a gift card to Sweet Frog Frozen Yogurt! Watch your email for when and how to get your kit.
To sign up for the take-home kits (if you aren't already registered), please use the registration button above.
To schedule a time for Pastor Mike and friends to bring VBS to your backyard, please contact her directly.
General Information About Our VBS Program
We are living in strange, new times, and helping kids learn about Jesus is needed as much as ever! For this reason, we intend to offer VBS in some format, NO MATTER WHAT. At this time, the plan is a morning VBS outdoor under canopy tents for elementary-aged children, and a take-home version for preschoolers with pre-recorded videos. Should we determine that in-person VBS cannot be offered safely (e.g. our region shifts back to Phase 2), all children registered will have the opportunity to participate in age-appropriate take-home VBS. Should we move forward with in-person VBS, every effort will be made to keep VBS as safe as possible, following all of the most current guidelines where COVID19 is concerned. Volunteers must assess their own health as they consider participating and parents assess the health of their children as they consider enrollment.
Vacation Bible School (frequently referred to as VBS) is a week-long program that teaches children about God and his love for them through songs, games, crafts, and many other exciting activities. This year, Yorkminster's VBS program takes place in the mornings, Monday - Friday. There is an optional open house Sunday night to get to know the leaders and layout of the program, and a concluding family program Friday night. Volunteers who work with the kids are trained and undergo a background check. We are blessed to have so many teachers, seniors, and willing parents and youth who make it their mission to shine the light of Christ to the participants of our VBS program.
Elementary (Rising Grades 1 - 5): for this age group, we are hoping/planning to have an in-person VBS option, with activities taking place outdoors, under tents.
Pre-schoolers (kids who will turn 4 by Sept 30, and kids who will enter kindergarten in the fall): "Take-home Virtual VBS" for families who register by the July 25 deadline. These kids will have videos pre-recorded by our teachers as well as crafts, and they can participate in a live-stream of the morning Celebration with singing and dancing!
Adult Volunteers: It takes a whole lot of people to make this event successful, and it's fun! There are lots of roles, from making decorations and getting everything ready ahead of time, to drama or shepherding kids through activities serving meals. Please let us know your availability by filling out the online volunteer form (available soon). We are sorry that at this time, we do not anticipate being able to offer daycare for children who are not old enough to participate in the in-person program.
Youth Volunteers: Middle schoolers can serve on our "Tech Team," working with Pastor Mike to take great pictures of all the fun for the slide shows and newsletter, as well as other tasks. High schoolers can volunteer to help with the crews, as well as help design and develop the decorations and facilitate activities. Youth who will be able to help with the week should fill out the volunteer form.
If you have questions about the VBS program, please contact Pastor Mike.
